Mr. Meowgo vs. Lucky the chipmunk   5 comments

Our cat Mr. Meowgo is a hunter even as his food bowl sits full to the brim with tasty food.

He brings mice, voles, birds, lizards and sometimes cute little chipmunks to the front door for our approval.

A stone cold killer

I have tried unsuccessfully in the past to help the chipmunks escape his lethal grasp.

Today a chipmunk lives with minor injuries due to the quick action of my husband!

The photo below shows the only injury to poor Lucky.

Chicken Delight with Eggs   17 comments

In the past few weeks the hens have provided us with over two dozen eggs and counting. I have made egg salad and even pickled some eggs.

I had to take a picture of our first two eggs!

Great chicken friends

  our first two eggs

Pullet eggs are great for pickling. I am going to try lots of recipes and create a few of my own.

My sweet feathered friends

The ladies and Big Bird watch me pull weeds from the garden for their midday salad. Big Bird demands attention with his loud crow along with the fifteen hens clucking at me.

Henny Penny enjoying a bit of scratch feed

The ladies are so very loving and loud when announcing the arrival of the newest egg addition. I know I am to blame for spoiling them but I care not. They feed us, amuse us, are great alarm systems, provide organic fertilizers, etc.

So for more entertaining photos…    Little B-Tips curious about the camera

Mr Meowgo likes the egg a little too much

Our trusted feline friend is not entirely pleased with our new feathered family. He is very curious and does watch over them.

Two hens in the box and one on her way in

Although there are eight different laying boxes, the hens only lay in the one box that I painted the word egg on…can they read? Or maybe it’s the classical music playing on NPR?  As you can see, two Rhode Island Reds are already in the laying box and a line is forming.

Room for three?

Henny Penny must be in dire straits to crowd with two other hens in the same laying nest.  Three hens sharing  I came back to find three eggs a little later in the day!

Love birds

Big Bird making some noise

Big Bird loves his special treats of sunflower seeds and cooked brown  rice.   Big Bird is the sweetest rooster  He loves to eat from my hand.

Dragon Heat:Up In Smoke   18 comments

The weather is indecisive this time of year luckily we have cured oak for firewood.

Great flames with oak wood

As I watch the fire taking shape, a dragon appears in the fire’s silhouette.

A sunny afternoon is the perfect time for this little lizard to catch some rays.

After only a few photographs, Mr. Lizard tires with all the attention. He retreats to his rock house.

Seems that winter and spring have argued over which is in control. Winter wins the weekend!

The fire dance

Who does not enjoy the warmth and glow that a fireplace provides?

I favor the photos taken without my flash. I rely on the light cast from the fire itself.

Time To Bug Out Photograghy: February   20 comments

Details matter. Nature’s attention to the insect world never ceases to delight.

Round Headed Boroers Larva

While chopping firewood, the strange-looking larvae start to drop from holes in the center of the hickory tree. The birds seem to relish in the special winter delicacy as if someone lifted the top off an aromatic pot of soup.

Winter housing busted for round headed borers larva

The hidden larva is from the Cerambycidae family. The Round Headed Borers larva is a new species for me to observe.

Hickory tree feeders:The Round Headed Borers larva

The orange spots add great color.

All sized Round Headed Borers larva   The various sizes do not matter to the birds. A tiny wren took flight and dropped the fatted larva food about five times before settling in to eat.

Color Splashes: Art from Art   36 comments

The painted chair is curing rapidly with the warm weather. Surveying the area I soon start finding the accidental art created from my project.

Art by accident:In color This is one of my favorite chair project by-product! The sun came out with perfect timing to capture the shadows from the grass blades.

Paint Flow

I am still finding bits of art unexpected and have painted many leaves on this sunny January day. I am not sure what I will do with them other than enjoying the experience.

Enjoy your day!
