Eastern Box Turtle Busted: Enjoying a ripe tomato   35 comments

Turtles are on the top of my list of favorite reptiles. We have many turtles living all around our little spot called home and apparently they love tomatoes as much as I.

He does not look very pleased to have me taking his photo but I cannot help myself from capturing great pictures.

He hung around as I gathered the ripe or ripening tomatoes. He hissed a little when I picked him up for a photo. I returned him to dine on the best of the tomatoes in my garden.

Enjoy your day!

  1. Turtles are so cute. But, I don’t know if I trust them. What’s that shell for? What have they to hide? They must be working for governmental agencies, hiding cameras in their cladding. I’m watching you, turtle man.

    • I have never considered your idea, but it makes me chuckle. Keep a close eye out for those hidden cameras. And thanks for visiting my blog. Take care, Anna

  2. These pics of the little box turtle are too cute. I adore box turtles but I have not seen one in many years. All of the areas surrounding our property have been developed except a limited number of woods and ravines. Love this post.

    • Thank you so much for visiting my blog. I was surprised to find that the eastern box turtle will live there entire life within 150 foot radius. I hope your woods and ravines are habitat to many turtles:) Thanks again for enjoying my blog and photos. Take care, Anna

    Turtles are COOL critters.

BUT, this one is extra pretty. You gotta like the colors of a turtle.

Just stay away from snapping turtles and soft shell turtles – if you want to keep your fingers.

    Enjoy!

  4. Beautiful box turtle with bright red orange eyes. Yes, they love tomatoes and canned dog food, not lettuce. I used to raise western box turtles and once had a large red-eyed male named lucifer and a female named Eve. After work I would sit in the backyard and hit a spoon on a can of dog food. They would come running! Thanks for visiting my blog.

    • Wow! What a neat pair of friends you had or have. I know they can live 30-50 years old. Thank you for taking time to enjoy my photos. Take care, Anna

  5. Lovely pics of the turtle. Thank you for visiting my blog today.

  6. Thanks for stopping by “Along the Way” and the follow! I’ve enjoyed your photos and to do so in the future as well.

  7. They are well worth sharing your tomatoes with! Nothing like that round here but at least we get to transport a variety of them for our clients and get our fix then,

  8. Very cute turtle! I just blogged about a turtle a couple of days ago as well! The shell and red eyes are so pretty on this one.

    • Hey thanks for visiting my blog! I guess you are a turtle fan as well. I am glad you like my photos. I believe the red eyes indicate that this turtle is a male. Thanks for checking out my blog. Take care, Anna

  9. I know this turtle… tell him Jay says “hi”….

  10. So cool.

  11. Greedy little bugger :-D

  12. Totally wish I’d taken this :)

  13. Ha ha he looks so grumpy! great shots

  14. Can’t decide which of these to comment on. (I’ve always wanted to see a stick bug, and I can never find them. So jealous. And the pictures of the caterpillar are just great.) But I think I’ll choose the turtle because I just cannot get over that adorable petulant look in his little red eyes. My bird makes that exact face. I love living in the middle of wild things. Thanks for sharing.

  15. I love his eyes; red as tomatoes.

  16. We have these beauties eat from our compost! We have done our reasearch to determine the male and female(shell shape, bottom and eye color), great science for the kids. When we forage for dewberries there are inevitably a few eating under the bushes! Good shots!

    • Hey there! I have seen our locals munching on our compost bin as well:) In my research, I was surprised to learn the small distance in which the Eastern box turtle spends it life. Thank you for visiting my blod! I am happy you enjoy my photos! Take care, Anna

  17. LOL he does NOT look pleased! :D

  18. I love, love, love box turtles. Who would ever think reptiles could have such distinctive personalities?
