One Arm:Praying Mantis   26 comments

Well this is a first for me.

The praying mantis is a fascinating insect. I have seen many over the years but none with a missing appendage.

Thinking he or she may need some help acquiring dinner. I used tweezers to pick up ants to offer for food.

I should feel bad for the ants but they are so invasive and their bites hurt.

The next morning the praying mantis had migrated from atop our grill cover to the screen covering our dining room window.

This morning he is gone. Safe travels my friend.

Enjoy your day!

  1. They are a bit weird in a scary way to me. In general I don’t really like insects but last year while collecting the grapes (it is now again the time to collect the grapes for wine by coincidence) one of these was in my shoulder and he really didnt care how much I tried to scare him away.

  2. They frighten me!! I could never get near to one XD.

  3. Hi Anna, thanks for liking my blog post. I’ve always been fascinated by odd looking insects, too. Especially those that like to eat bugs that eat my garden veggies. I enjoyed the pictures.

  4. You completed various good points there. I did a search on the topic and found the majority of folks will have the same opinion with your blog.

  5. I love preying mantis’… my granddaughter got interested in them during a science block in second grade — so I did too. I’m glad you fed him. I have three outside my home right now they’re very elegant. :)

  6. Wow, great shot! I’m sure your well wishes carried on with your little friend in its journey :)
Thanks so much for visiting my blog, btw. Much appreciated! :)

  7. Wow, great photos!

  8. I have an absolute phobia of grasshoppers, and yet praying mantis(s?) don’t bother me – too much. They are so cool that I try not to let myself be afraid of them!

  9. What awesome images!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wow! What memories! My 5 year old Grandson and I were down town Grand Rapids, MI at Art Prize. Walking between out door art exhibits of penguins, kaleidoscope, T-Rex and metal birds, admits hundred’s of people crowding around, a Praying Mantis walked out in front of us. Wide eyed, excited, he looked on. Worried for it’s personal safety another passerby assisted this magnificent creature to safety in a near by bush. Aindreas and I smiled and interacted with the people that gathered around for nature’s “art prize” life living exhibit outside the steps of the Ford Museum!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks for the trip down memory lane and the magnificence of the incredible being!

  10. Great close-ups. Looks a bit scary, though this poor chap has lost an arm :-( .

I think it’s actually a Praying Mantis – because it looks like it’s praying when it folds the arms, not a Preying Mantis, although it does prey on others.

  11. Lovely creature but sad it doesn’t have an arm.

  12. What an interesting story with such great photos. Very few crippled insects every photographed I would wager! Thanks for visiting my blog. I’m putting this one on my list to follow!
